ⓘ National parks under threat
Although this map is a celebration of National Parks, the truth is, that many national parks also face threats by human activity – deforestation, development, pollution, wildfires and tourism impact the small bits of green Europe currently under protection. It is visible on the map, that the National Parks are fragmented and on average may include only 1-5% of the country’s land area. Source
The designation of National Parks varies between countries, hence I’ve used the National Geographic ‘Complete National Parks of Europe’ as a reference. I also decided not to include overseas territories and some countries on the border of Europe to keep the map compact. Of course, I’ve excluded the countries currently threatening the area’s people and ecology.
