In 2019 I was looking for new ideas for my design practise and started making infographics and maps at home. After one of my ideas took off I first rented a shared desk and then a small studio in the premises of Tallinn Creative Incubator. In addition to creating graphics for the maps, I was also a micro-publisher running the online shop, processing orders, communicating to clients & bookshops and managing social media.
The flexible grass-root level approach and simple two-ways communication meant anybody from the public could contribute to the maps. The open digital maps were free for anyone to view and download from the HI Design blog. In two years the project also grew to include official map commissions from major UK cities with the highlight of 22,000 free maps distributed across Sheffield in the summer of 2021.
During the project HI Design homepage received over 130,000 views with 78,000 unique visitors viewing & downloading the maps and more than 1800 clients purchasing paper maps & posters.
