Where to go for a holiday this summer? This visualization ranks European capitals by their annual sunshine. Valletta is the sunniest capital with 3,054 hours of sunlight per year—about 70% of its total daylight hours. Tórshavn, at the other extreme, receives only 840 hours of sun annually.

The sunniest capitals are, as expected, in Southern Europe, but cities like Tallinn and Stockholm in Northern Europe are also relatively sunny. Some of the least sunny places include Brussels, Dublin, and Reykjavík. The ‘rays’ of the sun show the yearly patterns, with summers having the highest sunshine—for example, 372 hours in July in Valletta—and winters the lowest, with only 8 hours in December in Tórshavn.

The data is based on average sunshine hours collected over 30 years (1990–2020) via https://weather-and-climate.com
