The Long History of London does not dwell too much on single events. Instead, it looks at the events, infrastructure and enterprises that lasted for decades or even centuries. This visualisation aims to show how London has changed and progressed over nearly 2,000 years, from one time arc to another.

At first, progress was relatively slow, but as the population grew and the city expanded, new and more diverse arcs emerged. Each arc tells a story — some short, some long — and many are still ongoing.

Did you know that London’s oldest continuously operating market was founded in 1133? Or that there is a tree in London thought to be almost as old as the city itself? Or that Londoners once held Frost Fairs on the frozen Thames? Zoom in and discover how the city has built its many layers of history.
