This time chart maps the occurrence of surrealist artworks in the Belgian-Irish crime series This Is Not a Murder Mystery.

The series revolves around the central character René Magritte and his fellow surrealists at Lord James’s country house, where the group has been invited to prepare a surrealist exhibition. During the week of preparations, several characters lose their lives in grotesque yet strangely artistic ways. As the story rushes lavishly towards its conclusion, the series passes through scenes inspired by paintings, installations, and set designs from the era.

The first paintings seen in the mansion — works by Edvard Munch and Frida Kahlo — may serve as references to influences on Surrealism. Most of the surrealist artworks and props featured in the exhibition date around the period in which the series is set, with the exception of some later works, including Salvador Dalí’s religious paintings created during the 1950s. Several scenes, especially Magritte’s rooftop sequence with the inspector, are also inspired by his later work.
